Thomas Art History Student Research Grant The Art History Student Research Grant provides funding to support student research involving domestic or international travel to visit archives, libraries, museums, buildings, and other research sites. Both undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply. Preference is given to well-defined research projects that will allow students to gather primary source materials for a substantial research project for example, a senior paper or qualifying paper. Only recently available to broader audiences, Asmat art has made an international splash with its vivid colors and bold forms. Featured artworks range from the ceremonial to the utilitarian—shields and spears, spirit masks, woven bags, drums, openwork carvings, and figural sculpture—each one conveying the exceptional graphic impact Asmat art sophistication of the Asmat aesthetic.

Because the more ephemeral but equally important genres of Asmat music, dance, and painted body decoration are difficult to preserve and exhibit in a museum setting, the exhibition features work that takes durable physical form.

Many of these objects are valued beyond their immediate utility.
