I work with individuals and with couples. Individuals might have experienced depression, anxiety, grief, trauma, separation, illness, employment difficulties, loneliness or unsettling experiences in life.

I am a registered BUPA practitioner. These include depression, anxiety relationship problems, post traumatic stress disorder following sexual abuse, loss and bereavement and low-self-esteem amongst other problems.

In addition I have supervised professionals and trainees across the whole spectrum of mental health. Central to my way of working is the importance of the therapeutic relationship.

I aim to create a safe, confidential and non-judgemental environment where an individual can feel free to explore the aspects of their life which may be difficult and painful. The underlying causes of these difficulties are often unfamiliar.

Many emotional difficulties originate in our childhood where the quality of early attachment and attunement can determine our subsequent development. However each person is unique and therefore I adapt my approach accordingly.

My aim is to encourage each individual I see to gain sufficient insight and self-understanding in order to alleviate their distress and to live a more fulfilled and creative life.

I work in a humanistic way, which means that I believe that you have the ability to heal, grow and realise your own potential and my job is to offer the necessary conditions and support to enable that to happen. I will provide a confidential environment that is warm, respectful, understanding and open.

I work in the here and now and we can also explore repressed and unfinished issues, thoughts, feelings and destructive behaviours from your past that may affect your present life. I tailor the way I work to suit the needs of each client so I may incorporate approaches such as person-centred, gestalt, transactional analysis, existential and creative therapies.

As well as my private practice, I work for Brighton and Hove Integrated Care system offering counselling to women with mental health difficulties.

I offer both short and long term therapy for those experiencing a variety of concerns including anxiety, depression, bereavement, relationship difficulties, trauma and eating disorders.

I believe that the relationship which can be built between therapist and client is a wonderful tool which can enable a person to grow, realise their own strengths and lead a more contented life and am open to sharing my thoughts and feelings with you.

Integrative psychotherapy is a unifying psychotherapy that considers the importance of the whole person, paying attention to thoughts, feelings and somatic symptoms which cause dissonance and distress.

The interpersonal dynamic that takes place between myself and a client can be used to inform and deepen the work, and creates a space where such relational dynamics, though sometimes provoking, can be worked through, understood and improved.

I work with awareness of the body and am always fascinated by the solutions we hold within us when we learn how to listen on a sensory level. My background is in mental health work in Social Services, Psychiatric and Voluntary Sector settings.

Alongside this work I have first trained and then practiced Psychotherapy over a number of years. A substantial element of both the Humanistic and Analytic trainings is the requirement that the trainee be in therapy for the duration of study.

My approach is psychodynamic and my orientation is Jungian, which means that I am interested in the relationships between people and their worlds, both inner and outer.

I am also interested in how we find meaning in our lives in both a small and a larger sense. Most of us experience anxiety or depression at some stage in our lives or we need to come to terms with emotional pain or disappointment.

Often we can resolve this without outside help. Sometimes, however, the difficulties persist causing unhappiness at home and at work. This may be because current difficulties are stirring up feelings from the past of which we are unaware.

Psychotherapy can help individuals to understand hidden aspects of themselves by talking over a period of time in a reliable setting with a trained and experienced therapist. The time together with the therapist provides a space for reflection. The therapist listens and helps the individual to reach a deeper understanding of themselves, opening the way to change.

As the relationship with the therapist develops along with a sense of trust, the individual discovers new insights and then more appropriate ways of coping with problems and feelings can be found.

Sessions are usually held weekly so as to give as much continuity and support as possible. David Owen I have provided counselling and psychotherapy in a variety of settings sinceworking with issues that range from the consequences of severe abuse and trauma to what might be seen as more ordinary kinds of difficulty.
